An Ado-Ekiti Chief Magistrates’ Court has sentenced a 22-year-old man, Sunday Gmaed, to three months in prison for stealing seven chickens valued at ₦57,000.
According to the charge sheet, Gmaed committed the offence on June 28, 2025, at about 9:30 a.m. at a poultry farm in Odo village, along Ilawe Road in Ado-Ekiti. He was said to have unlawfully entered the premises, cut through the poultry's protective netting, and strangled the chickens before making away with them.
The police prosecutor, Inspector Sodiq Adeniyi, told the court that the offence contravened Section 302(1)(a) of the Criminal Law of Ekiti State 2021.
Initially arraigned on July 2, Gmaed pleaded not guilty and was granted bail in the sum of ₦20,000 with one surety in like sum. However, during the resumed hearing on July 11, he changed his plea to guilty and begged the court for mercy.
Delivering judgment, Chief Magistrate Kehinde Awosika sentenced him to three months in prison but offered him an option of a ₦30,000 fine.
The case has stirred reactions among residents, with many highlighting the contrast between the swift justice for petty crimes and the slow pace of action in high-profile corruption cases.
