In a decisive security operation aimed at restoring calm to Kwara State’s troubled riverine axis, operatives have apprehended a notorious gang leader known simply as Tambaya, alongside 15 other suspected criminals. The joint crackdown was carried out across Edu and Patigi Local Government Areas, following weeks of coordinated intelligence gathering and surveillance.
According to security sources, the operation also led to the neutralization of several armed gang members who resisted arrest. Two kidnap victims were successfully rescued during the raid, and over ₦11 million in suspected ransom money was recovered from the gang’s hideouts.
Tambaya, who had been on the wanted list of security agencies, was said to have masterminded a series of high-profile attacks on both security personnel and innocent civilians in the region, particularly in the Lafiagi area. His capture marks a significant breakthrough in the fight against banditry and violent crime in the state.
A senior security operative involved in the mission, who spoke on condition of anonymity, revealed that Tambaya had become a symbol of fear in the local communities. "He coordinated multiple deadly ambushes, extortion schemes, and kidnappings. His arrest is a major relief for the people of Edu and Patigi," the officer said.
Authorities confirmed that peace has now been restored in the affected areas, with residents beginning to resume normal life. Security forces have intensified patrols and surveillance in surrounding villages to ensure no resurgence of criminal activity.
Kwara State Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq praised the security agencies for their swift and professional conduct during the raid and assured citizens that the government remains committed to protecting lives and property.
The arrest of Tambaya is seen as a turning point in the state's ongoing campaign to dismantle criminal networks operating in its rural regions. Investigations are ongoing, and the suspects are expected to face prosecution after preliminary interrogation.
