The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) High Court has dismissed an application by former Kogi State Governor, Yahaya Bello, seeking the release of his international passport to enable him travel abroad for medical reasons.
Ruling on the matter on Thursday, Justice Maryanne Anenih clarified that the court does not have custody of the embattled ex-governor’s travel document. According to her, Bello's passport is currently held by the Federal High Court, and as such, her court lacks jurisdiction to issue any directive concerning its release.
The clarification came as a blow to Bello’s legal team, who had approached the FCT High Court with hopes of securing temporary relief amid ongoing legal troubles.
Bello, a former governor and prominent figure within the All Progressives Congress (APC), is facing multiple charges filed by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), bordering on alleged misappropriation of public funds and money laundering. The charges, which total over ₦190 billion, are among the most high-profile corruption cases involving a former state executive in recent years.
The matter has attracted significant public and media attention, particularly as Bello continues to deny any wrongdoing while consistently avoiding court appearances, citing health concerns.
Following Thursday’s proceedings, Justice Anenih adjourned the matter to October 8, October 9, and November 13 for further hearing. The case continues to unfold amid heightened expectations from Nigerians demanding accountability and transparency in the prosecution of corruption cases involving top political figures.
