The Federal Government has announced that the much-anticipated Kaduna–Kano standard gauge rail line will be completed by 2026, along with the Kano–Maradi rail corridor connecting Nigeria to Niger Republic.
Minister of Transportation, Senator Said Alkali, made this known during a strategic meeting with Governor Uba Sani of Kaduna State. The minister reiterated President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's administration’s commitment to expanding critical infrastructure as a driver of economic growth and regional integration.
Governor Sani, while applauding the Federal Government's support, revealed that President Tinubu has approved ₦100 billion for the Kaduna Light Rail project, with groundbreaking scheduled for September 2025. He described the light rail as a game-changer that will revolutionize urban transportation in the state, reduce congestion, and boost productivity.
The Kaduna–Kano rail is part of the larger Lagos–Kano standard gauge line intended to connect Nigeria’s commercial capital with the North-West. The Kano–Maradi extension further strengthens Nigeria’s cross-border logistics capability, opening new trade channels with the Niger Republic.
Both projects are expected to enhance mobility, create jobs, and stimulate economic development along their corridors once completed.
