The Federal Government has formally closed its terrorism case against the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu.
At the resumed hearing on Wednesday, the prosecution informed the Federal High Court in Abuja of its decision to rest its case after presenting its last witness, thereby concluding its evidence against the separatist leader. The court subsequently granted the request by Kanu’s legal team to file a no-case submission—a legal argument asserting that the prosecution has failed to establish a prima facie case warranting the accused to enter a defence.
The defence team has been given 14 days to file the no-case submission, while the Federal Government will have an equal number of days to respond. Justice Binta Nyako adjourned the matter to July 18, 2025, for the adoption of written addresses from both parties.
Nnamdi Kanu is facing terrorism-related charges filed by the Federal Government following his extradition to Nigeria in 2021. His continued detention and trial have sparked widespread debate and international concern.
