BREAKING: Heavy Security Presence as Senator Natasha Faces Arraignment in Abuja

By Zainab Imam

A tense atmosphere surrounds the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) High Court today as over 200 police operatives have been deployed ahead of the arraignment of Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan on a three-count charge of alleged defamation.

The charges, filed by the office of the Attorney General of the Federation, relate to alleged defamatory statements against Senate President Godswill Akpabio and former Kogi State Governor Yahaya Bello.

Crowds have gathered outside the court premises, with supporters of both camps present. Notably, former Minister of Education and activist, Dr. Oby Ezekwesili, is among those backing Senator Natasha. On the other side, loyalists of Yahaya Bello have also shown up in numbers.

Tensions are high, with civil society groups and human rights observers warning of potential clashes.

The case is being closely watched as it raises fresh concerns about the use of state power in politically charged disputes and the broader implications for freedom of expression in Nigeria.

More updates to follow as the court session progresses.
