KANO, Nigeria – June 2, 2025 – The League of Northern Democrats (LND), led by former Kano State Governor Ibrahim Shekarau, has resolved to pursue the registration of a new political party as its preferred strategy to align with the National Opposition Coalition Group. This coalition aims to present a unified challenge to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in the 2027 general elections.
The decision follows extensive consultations among key LND stakeholders and represents a major step toward reshaping the national political landscape. The group, composed of prominent northern political figures, met to deliberate on its role within the broader opposition movement, which is spearheaded by former Senate President David Mark.
According to Dr. Umar Ardo, convener of the LND, forming a new political platform is viewed as the most effective means to rally independent-minded politicians from across existing major parties. “Our consultations concluded that launching a new party presents the strongest path to success in 2027,” Ardo stated.
While the LND remains open to merging with existing parties, its current priority is to establish a fresh political entity. This new platform is intended to offer Nigerians a credible alternative to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and other established parties. The coalition’s overarching goal is to address critical national issues such as insecurity, poverty, and governance failures, especially in Northern Nigeria.
Speaking at a press conference in Kano, Shekarau emphasized the group’s commitment to national unity and development. “We are determined to join forces with a coalition that prioritizes the welfare of Nigerians and restores trust in governance,” he said.
Political analysts view the LND’s move as a calculated effort to boost the opposition’s chances in the 2027 elections. However, the group will face significant hurdles, particularly in navigating the stringent requirements set by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for party registration.
As the 2027 elections draw closer, the LND’s decision signals growing momentum among opposition forces to mount a credible challenge to the Tinubu administration. The next critical steps—formalizing the new party and strengthening coalition ties—are expected to play a decisive role in shaping Nigeria’s political future.
