Russian President Vladimir Putin hosted Burkina Faso President Ibrahim Traore in a meeting to further solidify the growing bilateral relations between the two nations during the 80th anniversary of Victory in the Great Patriotic War. Putin acknowledged Burkina Faso’s significant contribution during World War II, highlighting that 30,000 Burkinabe soldiers fought alongside Free France forces under General Charles de Gaulle to defeat Nazism.
The discussions primarily centered on enhancing cooperation in counterterrorism, trade, education, and humanitarian aid. Putin remarked on the renewed diplomatic efforts, noting that Russia resumed its embassy operations in Ouagadougou in 2023. Additionally, bilateral trade has shown promising growth, and the upcoming Burkina Faso Economic Days in Russia in 2024, alongside the establishment of an intergovernmental commission, demonstrate the strengthening of economic ties.
In a gesture of goodwill, Russia has increased its scholarship offerings for Burkinabe students for the 2024–2025 academic year, adding 27 additional spots. Furthermore, both countries are deepening cultural exchanges, including the Ouagadougou Russia House, and are planning joint research and training initiatives in the healthcare sector.
Russia has also committed to providing 25,000 tonnes of wheat in 2024, with more food aid expected in the near future. The meeting marked a pivotal moment in the evolving relationship between the two nations, with both leaders expressing optimism about the future and emphasizing the symbolic and strategic significance of Traore's visit.
