In a decisive move against illegal mining activities threatening both the environment and national revenue, operatives of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) have arrested 17 individuals in Ankpa Local Government Area of Kogi State. The operation, which also led to the seizure of three trucks and 39 motorcycles, marks another chapter in the NSCDC’s growing crackdown on economic saboteurs.
The raid, spearheaded by Assistant Commandant John Attah, was launched following persistent complaints by residents over environmental degradation, noise pollution, and the unchecked exploitation of mineral resources in the area.
NSCDC Commandant-General, Dr. Ahmed Audi, condemned the actions of the illegal miners, describing them as enemies of Nigeria's economic progress. He vowed to intensify surveillance and enforcement in resource-rich regions, stressing that “illegal mining is a direct assault on national development and a threat to local communities.”
“This operation is a message to all economic saboteurs: the days of impunity are over,” he said, reaffirming the Corps’ mandate to protect national assets and uphold environmental integrity.
The suspects are currently undergoing interrogation and will be charged accordingly. Meanwhile, investigations continue to trace the network of illicit miners and their sponsors.
As the federal government strengthens its regulatory grip on the mining sector, residents of Ankpa and beyond hope this crackdown signals a new era of accountability, order, and environmental justice.
