Contrary to claims by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) that controversial social media activist, VeryDarkMan, has been granted bail, his legal team has publicly denied receiving any official documentation to that effect.
Deji Adeyanju, a key member of the activist’s legal counsel, revealed in a statement on Monday that all efforts to obtain the bail documents from the EFCC have so far proven futile. According to him, the EFCC’s announcement amounts to what he described as a “social media bail.”
“We have made repeated requests for the official bail documents since the EFCC made the announcement. As of this moment, we have not received anything in writing. It appears they are only granting bail on social media,” Adeyanju said.
VeryDarkMan, known for his controversial online commentaries and public outbursts, was arrested by operatives of the EFCC last Friday on allegations that are yet to be officially disclosed. His arrest has stirred mixed reactions on social media, with some Nigerians calling for his release while others insist he must face justice.
While the EFCC maintains that the activist has been granted administrative bail, legal experts argue that without the necessary paperwork, the claim is legally meaningless. This has further fueled suspicions of deliberate delay tactics or possible political undertones surrounding his arrest.
As it stands, VeryDarkMan remains in EFCC custody and is expected to be arraigned on unspecified charges in the coming days. His supporters have vowed to continue demanding transparency and justice in the case.
The EFCC has yet to issue a formal response to the allegations made by Adeyanju and the legal team.
