Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Abbas Tajudeen, has issued a strong condemnation of the resurgence of deadly violence across Borno, Plateau, Benue, and Kwara States, describing the killings as unacceptable and a threat to national cohesion. In a passionate appeal, Speaker Abbas urged security agencies to act swiftly and decisively to quell the unrest and restore peace to the affected regions.
Speaking during a media briefing to mark the second anniversary of the 10th National Assembly, the Speaker did not mince words as he addressed a range of pressing national issues. He expressed deep concern over the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) and the Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency (NIHSA)’s joint warnings of impending floods across more than 30 states in the coming months. “We must not wait until lives are lost and livelihoods destroyed,” Abbas warned, calling for immediate disaster preparedness by both federal and state governments.
He stressed that the National Assembly, under his leadership, is committed to working closely with relevant agencies to ensure a proactive and coordinated response to the looming environmental threat. He also urged state governments to mobilize resources, raise public awareness, and activate early warning systems to mitigate the potential damage.
On the economic front, Abbas noted that Nigeria’s recent fiscal reforms have attracted positive commendation from the International Monetary Fund (IMF), which recognized the administration’s bold steps to stabilize the economy. He assured Nigerians that the legislature remains steadfast in supporting President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s economic recovery efforts, particularly policies aimed at enhancing revenue generation, curbing inflation, and ensuring job creation.
In a forward-looking legislative roadmap, the Speaker revealed that the House is set to prioritize constitutional and electoral reforms. These, he said, are essential to strengthening democracy, promoting inclusiveness, and ensuring credible future elections. “The 10th Assembly will leave a legacy of deep-rooted democratic reforms that reflect the will of the Nigerian people,” Abbas declared.
He also reiterated the House’s backing of the state of emergency declared in Rivers State, affirming that the situation requires urgent political and administrative attention to prevent an escalation of hostilities and breakdown of law and order.
To foster deeper public engagement, Speaker Abbas unveiled a series of programs and activities to commemorate the 10th Assembly’s second year in office. These include town hall meetings, legislative scorecard publications, and interface with civil society organizations to strengthen transparency, accountability, and public trust in the legislature.
“The Nigerian people remain our greatest asset and the heart of democracy,” Abbas concluded. “We must continue to listen, legislate, and lead in their best interest.”
