The Niger State Independent Electoral Commission (NSIEC) has confirmed that a total of 805 candidates from 10 political parties will be contesting the upcoming local government elections scheduled for November 1, 2025, across the state’s 25 local councils.
This announcement was made by the NSIEC Chairman, Mohammed Jibril Imam, during a press briefing held on Wednesday in Minna, the state capital. He disclosed that political campaigns have already commenced and will run until October 31, just a day before the polls.
Imam called on all political parties and their candidates to conduct issue-based campaigns and avoid inflammatory or inciting rhetoric that could disrupt public order or undermine the integrity of the electoral process.
In a reassuring statement, he noted that Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) will be granted the right to vote, emphasizing the Commission’s commitment to inclusiveness and democratic participation. He further assured residents of NSIEC’s preparedness to conduct a peaceful, transparent, and credible election.
"The Commission is fully ready to deliver an election that reflects the true will of the people," Imam stated, urging all stakeholders to play their part in ensuring a violence-free exercise.
