In a heartfelt reflection, Hon. Rotimi Makinde has spoken candidly about the deep personal inspiration behind his political journey and his growing call for radical change in Ile Ife's political landscape. Drawing strength and wisdom from the life of his late uncle, Michael Adedapo Omisade, Makinde paints a portrait of a man whose influence still resonates decades after his passing.
Michael Adedapo Omisade, a revered lawyer and a courageous political figure from Ile Ife, was a close associate of Chief Obafemi Awolowo. In the political turmoil of 1962, Omisade stood firm alongside Awolowo, accused of treason and felony, and was named the second accused in the infamous trial. Despite enduring imprisonment and political persecution, Omisade remained undeterred in his ideals—an embodiment of courage, intellect, and a relentless sense of justice.
“His intelligence, daring spirit, and unshakable commitment to justice shaped me,” Makinde recalled. “Even his unique style, down to the way he wore his cap, made a lasting impression on me. He loved Ile Ife deeply, and I strive every day to live up to that legacy.”
Hon. Makinde, a former member of the House of Representatives, emphasized the urgent need for a generational shift in leadership and political engagement in Ile Ife. “The time has come for a radical change,” he stated. “We must begin to free ourselves from the stranglehold of those who have turned political power into a tool of personal dominance.”
He stressed the importance of encouraging youth involvement in politics, arguing that fresh ideas and new faces are essential to reshaping the future of Ile Ife. “It’s time to break the cycle and inject new energy into our politics. Young people must rise to the occasion. The same old voices cannot lead us into a new era.”
Makinde advocated for a collaborative approach that includes all political stakeholders and communities to create a more united and progressive Ile Ife. He called for an intergenerational partnership—pairing seasoned leaders with emerging talents to ensure continuity, mentorship, and effective governance.
“We know those who have been privileged to serve this community and the real impact of their contributions,” he said. “Now, let us unite and focus on leadership that delivers real value and development to our people.”
With a powerful legacy behind him and a vision for transformation ahead, Hon. Rotimi Makinde is leading a passionate call for Ile Ife to awaken to new political possibilities—rooted in justice, unity, and progress.
