The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has once again reaffirmed his commitment to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) while taking a swipe at certain party members whom he accused of betraying the party ahead of the 2023 general elections.
Speaking at an event in Abuja, Wike did not hold back in his criticism, particularly targeting some governors who he claimed worked against the PDP’s interest while pretending to be loyal. He recalled how Bauchi State Governor, Bala Mohammed, had initially sought the backing of the G5 governors—comprising himself and four other PDP governors—against the party’s presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, only to later abandon them and reconcile with Atiku when it suited him.
"This party has suffered because of hypocrisy and selfishness," Wike stated. "You cannot come begging for support one moment and then turn around to act like you were never part of the struggle. Leadership is about integrity, and some people have shown they lack it."
The former Rivers State governor also criticized the leadership of the PDP in the South-East, particularly singling out the Enugu State Governor, Peter Mbah, for what he described as weak leadership that failed to assert the region’s influence within the party. According to Wike, the South-East deserved stronger representation and not leaders who simply "follow the tide without principles."
Despite the political turbulence and speculation surrounding his political future, Wike was clear about his loyalty to the PDP, dismissing concerns about public perception. He emphasized that his decisions have always been guided by a commitment to fairness and party stability rather than personal ambition.
"I have always stood by the PDP, and I will continue to do so. Those who think they can rewrite history should remember that actions speak louder than words," he asserted.
Wike’s remarks come amid ongoing internal struggles within the PDP, with tensions still lingering from the fallout of the 2023 elections. His reaffirmation of loyalty, coupled with his sharp criticisms, signals that the battle for the soul of the PDP is far from over.
