President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has paid glowing tribute to former President Olusegun Obasanjo on his 88th birthday, describing him as an extraordinary leader whose life is inseparable from Nigeria’s history.
In a heartfelt message, President Tinubu acknowledged Obasanjo’s pivotal role in the nation’s development, from his military service to his leadership in guiding Nigeria through critical transitions. He recalled Obasanjo’s historic acceptance of Biafra’s surrender in 1970, his stewardship after the assassination of General Murtala Mohammed, and his transition of power to civilian rule in 1979.
“Twenty years later, providence again called on him to lead, and he emerged as the civilian president who ushered in a democratic dispensation that has endured for 25 years,” President Tinubu noted.
Beyond his time in office, Tinubu recognized Obasanjo’s continued influence in governance, diplomacy, and conflict resolution across Africa. While acknowledging the former president’s sometimes controversial stance on national affairs, he commended his unwavering commitment to Nigeria’s unity and progress.
“I thank General Obasanjo for his statesmanship and leadership. At 88, he remains a pillar of wisdom. I pray for his continued strength and long life so that Nigeria and Africa may continue to benefit from his vast experience,” Tinubu stated.
On behalf of the government and people of Nigeria, Tinubu extended warm birthday wishes to Obasanjo, celebrating his legacy and enduring impact.
