In a major breakthrough against insurgency, security forces and local vigilance groups have gunned down Maigemu, a notorious leader of the Lakurawa terrorist group, in Kebbi State. The operation, which took place on Thursday in Kuncin Baba, Arewa Local Government Area, marks a decisive blow to the criminal network terrorizing the region.
Counter-insurgency expert Zagazola Makama confirmed the development on Friday via his X handle, stating that Maigemu was neutralized in a fierce gun battle. The notorious warlord, known for orchestrating cattle rustling and deadly raids, met his end as security forces intensified their crackdown on criminal elements.
The operation comes just days after Kebbi State Governor Nasir Idris visited Bagiza and Rausa Kade communities, reassuring residents of enhanced security following a brutal attack by suspected Lakurawa bandits that left six people dead. Intelligence sources reveal that the governor’s swift action in reinforcing security directly led to the mission that eliminated Maigemu.
Residents of Arewa LGA erupted in celebration upon receiving news of the terrorist leader’s demise, viewing it as a significant step toward reclaiming their communities from criminal gangs. Security agencies have since recovered Maigemu’s corpse as proof of the successful mission, sending a clear message to other insurgents still operating in the area.
While authorities remain vigilant against retaliatory attacks, the killing of Maigemu signals a renewed offensive against organized crime in Kebbi State.
