In a strategic move to maintain stability in its South South stronghold, the National Working Committee (NWC) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has approved the composition of a South South Zonal Caretaker Committee. The decision, announced on March 7, 2025, follows the expiration of the current Zonal Executive’s tenure on March 9, and aims to prevent any leadership vacuum that could disrupt party activities in the region.
The newly appointed committee, chaired by Bro. Emma Ogidi, will take over from March 10 and oversee the party’s affairs for three months or until a new Zonal Executive is elected in line with the PDP Constitution. Other members include Hon. Nicholas Ayuwa, Barr. Godwin Akpan Udonta, Mrs. Bekewei Ashanti, Idehen Ebomoyi, Dame Vivian Ahanmisi, and Chief Damiete Herbert-Miller, who will serve as Secretary.
According to the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Hon. Debo Ologunagba, the caretaker committee’s mandate is to ensure a smooth transition and maintain internal cohesion in the zone. The PDP leadership has urged all stakeholders, party leaders, and members in the South South to cooperate with the committee in the interest of the party’s unity and strength.
This move underscores the PDP’s commitment to consolidating its influence in the region, which has historically been a key support base for the party. With political realignments and elections on the horizon, the party’s ability to manage internal affairs efficiently will be crucial in determining its future electoral success in the zone.
