The internal turmoil within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has taken a dramatic turn as the party’s National Disciplinary Committee (NDC), led by former Foreign Affairs Minister Tom Ikimi, has recommended the expulsion of Senator Samuel Anyanwu. Anyanwu, a close associate of former Rivers State Governor Nyesom Wike, is accused of anti-party activities, further intensifying the already brewing crisis within the opposition party.
In a report submitted to the National Working Committee (NWC), the disciplinary panel cited Anyanwu’s alleged role in disrupting party activities at the PDP National Headquarters in Abuja on January 29 and February 1, 2025. According to the panel, the embattled politician invited security agents and thugs to interfere in party affairs—an action deemed a serious violation of Article 58 (1)(f) of the PDP Constitution.
Despite being summoned to defend himself, Anyanwu reportedly ignored the panel’s invitation, leading to the unanimous recommendation for his removal. The final decision now rests with the party’s National Executive Committee (NEC), which will determine his fate in the coming days.
This development comes amid a fierce leadership tussle over the position of PDP National Secretary. Both Anyanwu and Sunday Ude-Okoye have laid claim to the role, with the Court of Appeal ruling in favor of Ude-Okoye—a decision Anyanwu has challenged at the Supreme Court. The power struggle has led to heightened tensions at the party’s secretariat, with violent clashes erupting between their supporters.
As the PDP battles internal divisions, political analysts warn that these conflicts could further weaken the party ahead of crucial elections. With Wike’s influence looming large and his allies facing disciplinary actions, the PDP finds itself at a crossroads, struggling to maintain unity amidst deepening fractures.
