The Chairman of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) in Kano State, Hashimu Suleiman Dungurawa, has dismissed allegations by the All Progressives Congress (APC) that Senator Rabi’u Musa Kwankwaso, the NNPP’s 2023 presidential candidate, is a political refugee seeking relevance.
Speaking to journalists in Kano on Thursday, Dungurawa described the APC’s claims as baseless, affirming that Kwankwaso remains a bona fide member and the national leader of the NNPP.
“Contrary to the APC’s claim that Senator Kwankwaso lacks a political platform, he is not only a foundational member of the NNPP but also a true democrat who has consistently fought against injustice and misrule in Nigeria,” Dungurawa stated.
He further highlighted Kwankwaso’s political legacy, describing him as a pioneer who chose principle over personal gain. According to Dungurawa, Kwankwaso left the then ruling People’s Democratic Party (PDP) to co-found the APC, which ultimately rose to power at the federal level in 2015.
“Kwankwaso is certainly not a political refugee, as alleged by the APC. He is a leader whose dedication to Nigeria’s progress is unparalleled. It was through his efforts that the APC, under President Muhammadu Buhari, gained power at the center in 2015, including securing victories in Kano State and other regions,” Dungurawa added.
Expressing optimism about Kwankwaso’s future, Dungurawa confidently predicted his victory in the 2027 presidential election.
“By Allah’s will, Senator Rabi’u Musa Kwankwaso will become Nigeria’s next president in 2027. The NNPP will also deliver a resounding defeat to the APC in Kano, even more decisively than in 2023,” he asserted.
Dungurawa also took a jab at the PDP, predicting a dismal performance for the party in future elections.
“In 2027, we will ensure the PDP secures even fewer votes than the 15,000 it managed in the 2023 elections,” he said.
His remarks come in response to earlier statements by the APC in Kano, which described Kwankwaso as a “political refugee” who, according to the party, clings to Governor Abba Yusuf “like a leech” to remain politically relevant.
Kano APC Chairman Abdullahi Abbas alleged that Kwankwaso’s influence within the NNPP had diminished due to “self-centeredness and cluelessness.”
“Our supporters in the APC have no reason to worry about Kwankwaso. He has been expelled from the NNPP and now wanders aimlessly in the political wilderness,” Abbas claimed.
The APC also issued a warning against any attempts to manipulate the 2027 elections, vowing to resist what it described as “vote allocation,” which it alleged occurred during the 2023 polls.
“The APC will not tolerate any false narrative about the NNPP’s strength in Kano. We are prepared to reclaim our mandate,” Abbas declared.
With both parties sharpening their strategies, the stage appears set for an intense electoral battle in 2027.
