The Nigeria Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE) has reiterated its call for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to prioritize the implementation of local government autonomy. The union argues that empowering local governments is essential for fostering grassroots development and improving governance across the nation.
Addressing journalists in Abuja, NULGE President, Comrade Olatunji Ambali, emphasized that local governments play a pivotal role in delivering essential services such as healthcare, education, and rural infrastructure. However, their effectiveness has been stifled by inadequate funding and overreliance on state governments.
“Local government autonomy is not just a political slogan; it’s a necessity for the development of our rural areas. Without it, the vision of a prosperous and equitable Nigeria will remain a mirage,” Ambali stated.
The union stressed that restoring autonomy would ensure that funds allocated to local governments are directly utilized for community development projects rather than being diverted or withheld. Ambali also called on lawmakers to support constitutional amendments that guarantee financial and administrative independence for local councils.
As Nigerians await decisive action, many believe that local government autonomy will be a game-changer in bridging the developmental gap between urban and rural areas. Advocates argue that President Tinubu’s administration has a golden opportunity to champion this cause and leave a lasting legacy of inclusivity and grassroots empowerment.
The ball now lies in the court of policymakers to translate this growing demand into tangible reforms that uplift the nation’s underserved communities.
