As the festive season approaches, the Inspector-General of Police, Dr. Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, has assured Nigerians of enhanced security measures to protect lives and property. This move, according to the Police, is aimed at addressing the surge in criminal activities typically associated with the Yuletide season, including highway robberies, traffic-related crimes, and other public safety concerns.
To ensure maximum security, the IGP has directed the deployment of police personnel to strategic locations across the country. These include highways, urban centers, and recreational hubs where public gatherings are expected to increase. The initiative also includes heightened visibility of law enforcement on roads identified as crime-prone to deter potential offenders.
In a demonstration of the Force's readiness, the Nigeria Police Force has recorded notable achievements in the fight against crime. On December 10, 2024, operatives of the Lagos State Command apprehended four armed robbery suspects—Akeem Alabi, Adewale Sogbesan, Emmanuel Izeagbe, and Francis Okoko—suspected to belong to a robbery syndicate operating around the Costain area of Lagos. Similarly, on December 6, 2024, the Anambra State Command arrested a suspected armed robber, Miracle Mwakaloi, in Awka. The arrest led to the recovery of three AK-47 rifles from his residence, reinforcing the Police’s commitment to proactive crime control.
The IGP’s directive underscores the Force’s dedication to creating a safe environment for Nigerians to celebrate the Yuletide without fear. Enhanced patrols, community engagement, and targeted interventions are being implemented nationwide. Citizens are also encouraged to cooperate with the Police and report suspicious activities to ensure the success of these measures.
While urging officers to maintain professionalism and respect for human rights, the IGP reiterated the importance of collective vigilance in fostering security during the festive period.
This proactive stance by the Police aims to make the Yuletide season not only festive but also safe for all Nigerians.
