The Federal Executive Council (FEC) has approved the renaming of the University of Abuja to Yakubu Gowon University.
This announcement was made by the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, during the council’s final meeting of 2024, held at the Aso Rock Villa in Abuja.
According to the minister, the decision was made to honor General Yakubu Gowon, a former military leader and elder statesman, in recognition of his significant contributions to Nigeria.
“The Federal Executive Council has resolved to rename the University of Abuja in honor of elder statesman, General Yakubu Gowon,” Idris stated.
The renaming, though approved by FEC, now awaits further legislative action by the National Assembly to formalize the change.
