Borno State Governor, Professor Babagana Umara Zulum, has elaborated on the opposition to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Tax Reform Bill, stating that its implementation would disproportionately benefit Lagos State at the expense of other regions, particularly the North.
In an interview with BBC News Hausa, Governor Zulum explained that the proposed reforms would not only disadvantage the northern region but would also have adverse effects on other parts of the country, including the South East, South South, and certain states in the South West. He specifically named Oyo, Osun, Ekiti, and Ondo as states that might face challenges under the new tax regime.
While acknowledging arguments that the reforms might also disadvantage Lagos, Zulum emphasized that he harbored no ill will toward Lagos and hoped the state would remain unaffected. However, he stressed the need for fairness and equity, especially given the North's significant electoral support for President Tinubu.
“President Tinubu received 60% of his votes from the North. The notion that the region does not support him is incorrect. All we are asking is for him to withdraw these tax reform bills,” Zulum stated.
The Governor’s remarks come amid heightened controversy surrounding the bill, which the Senate has advanced to its second reading. Majority Leader Opeyemi Bamidele championed the debate, signaling the legislative body's determination to deliberate on the reforms despite mounting opposition from stakeholders.
Zulum’s firm stance has drawn attention to the growing dissatisfaction among northern leaders and their counterparts in other regions, who argue that the bill could exacerbate regional inequalities. His call for a revision underscores a broader demand for policies that promote nationwide inclusivity and economic balance.
As the debate continues, all eyes are on President Tinubu and the National Assembly to determine the fate of the contentious Tax Reform Bill.
