In a bid to boost operational efficiency within the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), the International Monetary Fund (IMF) announced on November 8, 2024, a new partnership aimed at enhancing the Service’s capacity and effectiveness.
An IMF delegation, led by Ivohasina Fizara, Director of IMF AFRITAC West 2, visited the NCS Headquarters in Abuja to discuss key initiatives. Fizara highlighted the IMF’s commitment to addressing operational challenges within the NCS, emphasizing the benefits of professional attachments and learning opportunities abroad for senior NCS staff to tackle similar challenges through shared experiences.
"We aim to work closely with Nigerian entities to offer professional attachments abroad for NCS senior staff, allowing them to gain valuable insights into handling similar challenges elsewhere," Fizara stated. He further assured that the IMF would provide technical support, regional workshops, and hands-on training to aid the NCS in meeting its objectives.
Representing Comptroller-General Adewale Adeniyi, Deputy Comptroller-General Jack Ajoku welcomed the IMF’s commitment, expressing optimism about the planned collaboration. He announced that the NCS would designate a liaison officer to streamline ongoing efforts, ensuring that the partnership yields meaningful results.
“We are encouraged by today’s discussions, and your presence here has significantly advanced our goals as a Service,” Ajoku remarked.
The meeting concluded with a group photo, underscoring the commitment between the IMF and the Nigeria Customs Service to drive impactful change in Nigeria's customs operations. This collaboration stands as a crucial step toward modernizing and strengthening NCS’s operational capabilities.
