In a significant crackdown on cybercriminal networks, the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) recently apprehended 130 suspects, including 113 foreign nationals and 17 Nigerians, accused of orchestrating high-level cybercrimes and hacking activities that pose potential threats to national security. The operation, which took place in Abuja's Next Cash and Carry area in Jahi, uncovered a network utilizing advanced computer systems and technology to perpetrate these alleged crimes.
The police raid, led by Assistant Inspector-General of Police for Zone 7, AIG Benneth Igweh, was a coordinated effort between the NPF Zone 7 Command and the National Cyber Crime Centre (NPF-NCCC). Among the arrested suspects are 87 males and 26 females of Chinese and Malaysian origin, alongside their Nigerian counterparts, who reportedly used sophisticated devices to conduct cybercrimes with possible links to security threats within the country.
Following the arrests, the Inspector General of Police (IGP) ordered a thorough investigation, including a comprehensive scientific analysis of the evidence seized from the suspects. According to ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, Force Public Relations Officer, the findings will guide further actions, and the suspects will face prosecution upon the investigation’s conclusion.
“We are meticulously analyzing the evidence and will keep the public informed of any developments in this case,” said ACP Adejobi in a statement from Force Headquarters in Abuja on November 3, 2024.
