In response to the recent detention of young individuals, the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) has pledged decisive action to ensure the welfare of young detainees within Nigeria’s Police detention facilities. Following the remand and arraignment of several youths on November 1, the IGP, currently attending the Interpol General Assembly in Glasgow, received a comprehensive report on the conditions faced by these young detainees.
Initially, while attending the African Union Mechanism for Police Cooperation committee meeting in Algiers, Algeria, the IGP ordered a thorough investigation into the welfare of young detainees in custody. The findings of this investigation, which the IGP has now reviewed in Glasgow, prompted a commitment to implement corrective measures for any procedural deficiencies identified.
To emphasize a child-sensitive approach in law enforcement, the IGP has convened a conference on November 7, 2024, at the Police Resource Center in Jabi, where all Deputy Commissioners (DCs) of Criminal Investigation Departments (CIDs) and Heads of Investigation Units will gather for a workshop focusing on the best practices in child-friendly investigations.
In a statement from the Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the Nigeria Police Force reiterated its dedication to maintaining a legal and ethical framework that prioritizes fairness and accountability, especially for vulnerable populations. The commitment to improving detainee welfare is part of the IGP’s broader vision for a professional and humane policing system in Nigeria.
This proactive approach by the IGP underscores a shift towards more compassionate handling of young individuals in custody, reflecting the force’s dedication to reform and the protection of the rights of minors.
