The Nigerian Army has initiated an investigation into a viral video that appears to show a senior officer and two soldiers assaulting a man and woman in Abuja. The incident, reportedly sparked by an accusation of “unlawfully overtaking” a military convoy, has drawn significant public outrage.
Eyewitnesses claim that the couple was stopped by soldiers before the altercation escalated. The video shows the man bleeding from his forehead, allegedly after being slapped, while his wife protested against the treatment. After the confrontation, the soldiers reportedly handcuffed the pair and transported them to the Gwarimpa police station, instructing officers there to detain them indefinitely.
In response, Lieutenant General Olufemi Oluyede, Acting Chief of Army Staff, ordered a comprehensive probe to determine the events surrounding the incident. Major General Onyema Nwachukwu, the Director of Army Public Relations, emphasized that the Army remains committed to upholding its constitutional role of protecting law-abiding citizens. He assured the public of a transparent investigation and appropriate actions based on the findings.
This case adds to ongoing concerns about allegations of misconduct among security personnel and highlights the importance of accountability within the armed forces.
