Vice President Kashim Shettima is set to lead Nigeria's delegation to the 2024 Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM), following a mandate from President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. The prestigious event will be held from October 21 to 26 in Apia, Samoa, marking the first time CHOGM will convene in the Pacific region. The meeting, themed "One Resilient Common Future: Transforming Our Common Wealth," will see leaders from 56 member countries, including King Charles of England, discussing strategies to bolster resilience, leverage shared strengths, and enhance digital connectivity across the Commonwealth.
A significant agenda item at this year's CHOGM will be the election of the next Commonwealth Secretary-General, a position poised to be filled by a candidate from the African region, in line with the Commonwealth's rotational principle. With contenders from Lesotho, Ghana, and The Gambia vying for the role, Nigeria’s influence, as the largest African member state, will be crucial in shaping the outcome of the selection process.
Building on the achievements of CHOGM 2022, VP Shettima and other global leaders will address pressing issues such as economic development, environmental sustainability, and security. The discussions will aim to chart a path towards greater trade, innovation, and youth empowerment for the 1.5 billion young people across Commonwealth nations.
Shettima will also engage in high-level dialogues during the Commonwealth Business Forum, an avenue for attracting foreign investments into Nigeria, as experts from various industries propose solutions to global economic challenges. Additionally, the Vice President is set to participate in the People's Forum, a platform designed for public engagement on development issues, as well as bilateral and executive sessions with other world leaders.
