In a bold move to counter the effects of Western sanctions, Russia's National Payment Card System (NSPK) has launched "Volna," a cutting-edge domestic payment service aimed at replacing Apple Pay and Google Pay. The introduction of Volna marks a significant step in Russia's efforts to strengthen its financial independence, allowing iOS and Android users to conduct contactless payments using Bluetooth technology. Unlike conventional systems, Volna eliminates the need for close smartphone positioning, making transactions smoother and more convenient.
The service is designed to work with a new generation of payment terminals, offering both online and offline payment capabilities. It seeks to cater to a wide range of customers, including those in areas with limited internet connectivity, thereby expanding access to secure and efficient payment options across the country. Volna's debut comes amid a growing shift toward domestic solutions, as the country has faced restrictions on international payment systems since 2022 when sanctions led to the withdrawal of major Western financial services.
NSPK has reported that around 20 leading Russian banks have already shown interest in integrating Volna into their services. This development aligns with the broader strategy to enhance the existing Mir payment system, which was initially established to ensure financial stability after earlier sanctions. Together, Volna and Mir represent a concerted effort to build a robust, self-reliant financial ecosystem in Russia, allowing consumers and businesses to continue operating without reliance on foreign technologies.
