In a recent address, Edo State Governor Mr. Godwin Obaseki voiced his deep understanding of the widespread economic difficulties faced by Nigerians over the past year due to recent federal policies. As citizens prepare for the nationwide #EndBadGovernance protests, Obaseki has urged organizers to consider alternative forms of protest other than street demonstrations.
The Governor assured the public that the state government has coordinated with security agencies to maintain peace and protect genuine protesters. Nonetheless, he revealed troubling intelligence suggesting that some political factions plan to exploit the protests for violent ends, aiming to vandalize public infrastructure under the guise of civil disobedience.
“Our intelligence has uncovered schemes to infiltrate the protests with armed groups and cultists, targeting public buildings such as the Secretariat Complex in Benin City and newly renovated educational and healthcare facilities,” Obaseki stated. “These actions appear to be politically motivated, with the aim of disrupting the upcoming gubernatorial elections.”
Obaseki criticized recent federal policies, including the elimination of fuel subsidies and currency reforms by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), which have significantly worsened living conditions through high food prices and inflation. Despite the state government's initiatives to mitigate these issues, such as increasing the minimum wage and providing free transport and internet services, the economic strain persists.
He emphasized the importance of conducting protests peacefully and cautioned against allowing violent elements to hijack the movement. Obaseki pledged a robust security response to any attempts to use the protests for violent or destructive purposes.
The Governor reassured citizens of their safety and urged them to continue their daily activities without fear, as the government remains committed to upholding law and order and advancing the welfare of Edo State.
