The Nigerian Army has responded to a viral video circulating on social media, which alleges that soldiers of the 159 Battalion in Kanama, Geidam Local Government Area (LGA), Yobe State, are being poorly fed. The video, which has sparked considerable concern, was recorded by a police officer stationed with the troops, not by the soldiers themselves.
Following the video's circulation, Lieutenant General Taoreed Lagbaja, the Chief of Army Staff (COAS), ordered an investigation led by the Commander Sector 2 Operation HADIN KAI. This investigation aimed to verify the claims and address any potential issues related to the soldiers' feeding.
The investigation has determined that the video in question does not accurately represent the conditions at the 159 Battalion. Contrary to the video's claims, no personnel at the location were served substandard meals. Preliminary findings suggest that the police officer who recorded and disseminated the video may have had ulterior motives, which are still under investigation.
The Nigerian Army emphasizes its commitment to the welfare and well-being of its troops. The COAS has demonstrated a strong dedication to improving soldiers' conditions, particularly those on the frontlines. Recent welfare initiatives include an increase in Ration Cash Allowance, prompt medical evacuations for wounded soldiers, payment of long-overdue Group Life Insurance Scheme benefits, and the Affordable House Ownership Option for Soldiers (AHOOAS), which covers a significant portion of housing costs. Additionally, there have been extensive upgrades to Army Reference Hospitals and other medical facilities, as well as ongoing renovations and new construction for soldiers' accommodations.
