In a recent statement, Nasir El-Rufai, the former Governor of Kaduna State, addressed a pressing issue that he believes is holding back Nigeria's progress: the deep-seated envy within the country’s political circles. El-Rufai described envy as a "persistent plague" that has corroded the core of Nigerian politics, urging a collective shift towards unity and collaboration among leaders.
El-Rufai pointed out that envy has grown into a powerful force within the political class, often aimed at undermining those who are perceived as more capable or successful. He reflected on a sentiment expressed by U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris: “None of us has to fail for all of us to succeed. And in unity, there is strength.” This perspective, according to El-Rufai, is one that Nigerian politicians must embrace if they hope to build a stronger, more cohesive nation.
The former governor argued that, instead of celebrating competence and dedication, many political figures in Nigeria are quick to criticize and sabotage their peers. This destructive behavior, he suggested, is driven by a mindset that believes “everyone must fail for one to succeed.” Such thinking not only stifles progress but also breeds a culture of animosity and division.
El-Rufai warned that unchecked envy could easily spiral into hatred, leading to actions that are not just harmful but also detrimental to national development. He cited instances where envy has led to perjury, defamation, and even violence, with long-lasting consequences for both individuals and society at large.
Despite his concerns, El-Rufai emphasized the urgent need for a change in mindset among Nigeria's political leaders. He called for a collective effort to root out envy and cultivate a spirit of mutual respect and cooperation. Only by doing so, he argued, can Nigeria hope to realize its full potential and achieve a position of prominence on the global stage.
El-Rufai concluded with a hopeful message, expressing his belief that, with the right attitude and effort, Nigeria can overcome this "disease of envy" and move towards a future marked by unity and shared success. His comments have since sparked a lively debate on social media, with many Nigerians reflecting on the role of envy in their country's politics and considering how best to address it for the nation's betterment.
