Inspector General of Police IGP Kayode Egbetokun Denounces Misinformation
In a recent press release, the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) clarified the misinformation spreading across social media platforms, including WhatsApp, featuring a picture of the Inspector General of Police, IGP Kayode Egbetokun, Ph.D., NPM. The message, circulating widely, poses several questions and opinions about protests, falsely attributed to the NPF.
The NPF emphasized that this message does not reflect its views or ideals and urged the public to disregard such content. Official communications from the NPF are made exclusively through its verified channels.
The NPF reiterated its dedication to maintaining peace and order throughout Nigeria. The Force does not endorse any message that could incite division, violence, or destruction and called on Nigerians to engage in peaceful and constructive activities that contribute to the nation's progress and unity.
Furthermore, the NPF warned against the spread of misinformation, disinformation, and fake news. Such actions are criminal offenses under the Cybercrimes (Prohibition, Prevention) Act, 2024, and other relevant laws in Nigeria. The dissemination of fake or misleading content can lead to a breakdown of law and order, and offenders will be prosecuted.
