President Bola Tinubu has addressed concerns regarding potential manipulation by interest groups in the nation's economic reforms. During a meeting with a delegation of Islamic leaders led by Sheikh Bala Lau at the State House on Thursday, Tinubu emphasized that his campaign was self-funded, without obligations to any individuals or institutions.
Tinubu attributed his electoral success to divine intervention, meticulous planning, and widespread support from Nigerians. He stated, “I have no cabal. I have no sponsors. The money I spent on the elections was my personal fortune. At some point, the odds were against me; banks were locked. But Allah, the Almighty God, said I will be the President. Mine is to now follow the leading and teaching of the Almighty God.”
The President underscored the importance of maintaining a good conscience as a robust defense against corruption. He also highlighted the need to prioritize the future of the nation's children, emphasizing the responsibility to educate them on good and responsible citizenship.
Addressing recent protests, Tinubu cautioned that actions driven by anger and hate could lead to violence and setbacks for the country. He revealed plans to rework the social welfare scheme to reach the ward level, ensuring support for the poor and vulnerable. This includes the introduction of student loans to cover school fees and consumer credit to aid citizens in purchasing cars and houses, with gradual repayment options. Additionally, he announced a more than 100 percent increase in the minimum wage.
Tinubu criticized the sponsors of protests, accusing them of placing selfish ambitions above national interest and lacking true patriotism. He warned against the risks of turning Nigeria into a conflict-ridden state, urging caution against premature politics fueled by hate and anger.
In his response, Sheikh Bala Lau assured the President of the delegation's support through prayers and increased sensitization efforts. He emphasized the paramount importance of peace, drawing on religious teachings that prioritize peace and guidance.
