In a recent statement broadcasted on Channels TV, the government of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has articulated its stance on the planned nationwide protest. Speaking through his spokesperson, Rabiu Ibrahim, the Minister emphasized the President's commitment to upholding the freedoms of all citizens, as long as these actions remain within the bounds of the law. "The President is not an opponent of protest of any kind but is an opponent of violence and anything that will negatively hamper the wellbeing of Nigerians," the statement read.
This announcement follows a high-level meeting involving key government officials, including Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF) George Akume, National Security Adviser (NSA) Nuhu Ribadu, and several ministers. The primary focus of the meeting was to deliberate on the upcoming nationwide protest scheduled for next month.
In the discussions, the Federal Government resolved to engage with various stakeholders in the days ahead to address the concerns fueling the protest. The government has urged protesters to reconsider their planned actions, suggesting that protests may not provide the solutions sought. Instead, the Federal Government, through the Minister of Information, has called for patience and requested additional time to address the issues at hand.
This dialogue highlights the government's proactive approach to maintain order and ensure the safety and wellbeing of all Nigerians, while respecting the rights of citizens to express their grievances peacefully.
