The North Central All Progressives Congress (APC) Forum has called for the adoption of a regional system of government in Nigeria, citing what it describes as the marginalization of the region despite its abundant human and natural resources.
During a press briefing on Friday in Jos, the Plateau State capital, the forum's Chairman, Alhaji Saleh Mandung Zazzaga, addressed the media on "issues of urgent national importance." He emphasized that a governance structure allowing each region to utilize its resources to address local needs is the only viable solution given the perceived neglect of the North Central region in national affairs.
Alhaji Zazzaga pointed out that the North Central region is well-equipped with quality education, rich natural resources, political influence, and robust agricultural capabilities. He argued that these assets could drive significant development within the region, leading to a more prosperous and self-sufficient society.
"Our call for the regional government has become necessary due to the marginalization of the North Central region. The North Central has contributed a lot to the nation, in terms of agriculture, education, natural resources, political contributions to government and the emergence of national leaders, among other vital national contributions, but yet has been marginalized over the years," Zazzaga stated.
He highlighted the region's contributions since the democratic era began in 1999, noting its role in the growth of democracy and the emergence of numerous national leaders, including presidents. Despite these contributions, Zazzaga lamented the continued marginalization of the region, particularly in political appointments. He cited the recent controversy over the APC National Chairmanship position, which was moved to the North West rather than being retained in the North Central region as an example of this marginalization.
"After a careful consideration of how marginalized we have been in this nation despite our endowments and contributions to national development, we the North Central APC Forum are calling for the regional system of government," Zazzaga concluded.
The forum's call for a regional government reflects growing sentiments in the North Central region about the need for a more equitable distribution of political power and resources in Nigeria.
