In a significant political development, Atiku Abubakar, the Peoples Democratic Party’s (PDP) presidential candidate in the 2023 election, has hinted at the possibility of backing his Labour Party rival, Peter Obi, in the 2027 presidential race.
The former Vice President, who is currently engaged in discussions with stakeholders from various opposition groups, indicated his willingness to support Obi if the Labour Party nominates the former Anambra governor. This revelation was made during an interview with BBC Hausa Service, as reported by The Sun.
The recent private meeting between Atiku and Obi has fueled speculation about a potential merger of opposition parties ahead of the 2027 elections. This move aims to create a formidable coalition to challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). Atiku confirmed the strategy, stating, "We can merge to achieve a common goal. So, it’s possible and nothing can stop it if we so wish to achieve that."
Elaborating on his stance, Atiku affirmed his readiness to support the Labour Party’s decision if it selects Peter Obi as its presidential candidate. “If the new party decides that it’s the turn of the South-East and Peter Obi is chosen, I won’t hesitate to support him,” he said. He also reiterated his commitment to party decisions, noting that he had respected the open nature of the 2023 presidential ticket.
This potential alliance marks a pivotal moment in Nigeria’s political landscape, as opposition parties explore strategies to unseat the APC in the next general election.
