In a recent development in Nigeria's telecommunications sector, major players including Glo, MTN, Airtel, and 9Mobile have raised concerns over the need for a tariff increase. The telcos are urging the federal government to initiate constructive dialogue to address pricing challenges, as reported by Daily Trust.
Citing the disparity between current pricing mechanisms and economic realities, the telecommunications giants highlight the necessity for government intervention to ensure industry sustainability and bolster investor confidence. Despite economic hardships, these companies emphasize that they have refrained from adjusting prices, a stance maintained for over a decade.
In a joint statement issued by the Association of Licensed Telecommunications Operators of Nigeria (ALTON) and the Association of Telecommunication Companies of Nigeria (ATCON), ALTON Chairman Mr. Gbenga Adebayo and ATCON President Mr. Tony Emoekpere underscore the regulatory hurdles hindering price adjustments. They assert that a lack of alignment with economic realities threatens the industry's viability and could undermine investor confidence.
The statement further emphasizes the imperative for a dialogue between government and industry stakeholders to establish a pricing framework that balances consumer affordability with operators' financial viability.
