EFCC Threatens Military Action to Apprehend Former Kogi State Governor

In a dramatic turn of events, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has escalated its pursuit of the immediate-past governor of Kogi State, Yahaya Bello, resorting to the possibility of military intervention to extract him from his undisclosed location. The commission's relentless pursuit stems from allegations of financial mismanagement during Bello's tenure as governor.

Despite the cloak of immunity afforded to Bello's successor, Governor Ahmed Ododo, under Section 308 of the 1999 Constitution, the EFCC's efforts to apprehend the former governor have been stymied. Reports suggest that Bello may be seeking refuge within the confines of the Kogi State Government House, exploiting the protection provided by Governor Ododo's immunity.

The EFCC's frustration reached a boiling point when their attempted raid on Bello's Abuja residence yielded no results due to undisclosed external influences. Consequently, Bello's absence thwarted his scheduled court appearance, further intensifying the commission's determination to bring him to justice.

Speaking on behalf of the EFCC, Counsel Mr. Kemi Pinheiro, SAN, declared the commission's unwavering commitment to ensuring Bello faces trial, even if it necessitates enlisting military assistance. Pinheiro emphasized that immunity does not extend to individuals surrounding the governor, asserting that no one is exempt from the law's jurisdiction.

"We may have to invite the military to move Yahaya Bello out of where he is hiding," Pinheiro declared. "We may have to engage the military to force him out because immunity does not cover him where he is hiding. No one is above the law. Immunity covers only the governor and not everyone around him."

As the standoff between the EFCC and Yahaya Bello persists, the looming threat of military involvement underscores the gravity of the situation. The nation watches with bated breath as the pursuit of justice unfolds, with the EFCC determined to uphold the rule of law and hold accountable those entrusted with public office.
