NEC Unveils Measures to Ensure Food Security and Economic Stability

In a press release from the State House signed by Stanley Nkwocha, the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media & Communications, the National Economic Council (NEC) has announced decisive steps aimed at bolstering food security and tackling economic challenges in the nation.

Chaired by Vice President Kashim Shettima, the 139th virtual meeting of the Council deliberated on various strategies to address the pressing issue of food security. Notable among these initiatives is the provision of fertilizer to farmers and the establishment of Agro-Rangers to combat insecurity in agricultural zones.

Highlighting the importance of collaborative efforts, Vice President Shettima emphasized the necessity of developing comprehensive short-term, medium-term, and long-term strategies to navigate Nigeria through its economic hurdles.

Following a presentation by the Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Abubakar Kyari, the Council directed engagements with major fertilizer producers such as Indorama, Dangote, and Notore. The focus is on ensuring the availability of essential agricultural inputs to enhance productivity.

Moreover, the Council deliberated on the establishment of Agro-Rangers in the short term and the potential creation of state police in the long term to address security threats faced by farmers. This discussion was prompted by insights shared by the Minister of Police Affairs, Sen. Ibrahim Geidam.

In addition to these measures, the government plans to release 42,000 metric tonnes of food commodities from the National Strategic Reserve to stabilize prices amidst rising inflation. The Minister of Agriculture also advocated for measures against the dollarization of locally produced commodities, which adversely affects fertilizer prices and agricultural output.

Vice President Shettima, in his address titled "It’s Time To Speed Up Our Prosperity Quest," underscored the urgency of making sound economic decisions aligned with the aspirations of Nigerians. He stressed the need for concerted efforts to redirect the economy towards competitiveness and sustainability.

The meeting also covered updates on various economic matters, including the state of accounts such as the Excess Crude Account and discussions on the health sector's wide approach.

Additionally, the NEC reviewed the progress of the ad hoc committee on flood prevention and response, emphasizing the importance of preparedness for the 2024 rainy season. Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo of Kogi State was appointed as the new chairman of the Committee on Flood Mitigation, Adaptation, Preparedness, and Response.
