The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has arraigned the former Minister of Power and Steel, Mr Olu Agunloye, before Justice Donatus Okorowo of the Federal High Court on Wednesday. Agunloye, who served during the Obasanjo administration, pleaded not guilty to charges related to a $6 billion power scheme involving the Mambilla hydropower project.
Justice Okorowo ordered Agunloye's remand in the Kuje Correctional Center until his bail application is considered. The charges against him stem from allegations by Obasanjo regarding the Mambilla power project, accusing Agunloye of unlawfully awarding the scheme without Federal Executive Council approval.
Agunloye, in a statement issued by his friend, Oluwafisan Bankale, asserted his innocence and accused Obasanjo of distorting information. He called for the identification and public accountability of all involved in the controversy.
Facing charges of fraud and forgery, Agunloye expressed confidence that the accusations would not stand, emphasizing his innocence. He thanked supporters and revealed health issues exacerbated during his EFCC detention.
The EFCC rearrested Agunloye on December 13, 2023, citing an arrest warrant after allegations that he had jumped bail. The legal proceedings shed light on the complexities surrounding the Mambilla power project and its alleged mismanagement during Agunloye's tenure.
