By Mohammed Bello Doka

In a shocking turn of events, the management of Independent Radio and Television (ITV/Radio) is in mourning following the tragic murder of one of its staff, Mr. Hillary Nosa Odia. The incident occurred on the night of December 24, 2023, when unknown assailants shot him around Esigie Street, Off 2nd East Circular Road, Benin City.

The Managing Director of the broadcast station, Engr. Elvis Obaseki, expressed deep sorrow and called for a comprehensive investigation by the Police, DSS, and other security agencies in the state to apprehend those responsible for this heinous act. The station pledges full cooperation with the authorities in the ongoing investigation.

The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Edo State Council, has extended heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family, colleagues, and ITV/Radio. In a joint statement, NUJ Chairman comrade Festus Alenkhe and Secretary Andy Egbon urged the security agencies, particularly the Nigeria Police, to thoroughly examine the circumstances surrounding Hillary Odia's murder.

The union mourns the loss of a dedicated broadcaster and calls on Nigerian journalists to diligently investigate the incident, ensuring comprehensive coverage of the tragic event.

Amidst the sorrow, the Odia family refutes claims made in a national newspaper regarding a similar incident involving a family member last year. Osa Nosa Odia, Hillary's immediate younger brother, clarified that no family member had previously died in such circumstances. The family asserts that Hillary was not involved in any cult activities and was not planning to relocate to the Upper Mission axis of Benin City.

As the family grieves, they call on the public, especially journalists, to exercise caution when commenting on Hillary's murder and seek accurate information before making statements. The Odia family, in the midst of this tragedy, remains resolute in setting the record straight about their beloved Hillary Nosa Odia.
