In the realm of Nigerian politics, one figure stands out: Chief Olufemi Fani-kayode, the Sardaunan Shinkafi affectionately known as FFK. With a distinguished background as the former Minister of both Culture and Aviation, Fani-Kayode has earned a reputation as a man of honor, courage, and dedication in public service. Beyond tribal or religious divides, he has proven himself to be a true nationalist and a champion for the Nigerian people. It is therefore no surprise that when Mr. Daniel Bwala, the spokesman for the Atiku campaign council, recently congratulated Fani-Kayode on social media, the online community ignited with excitement.
The sheer force of this viral message sent shockwaves through both the opposition PDP and the Labor Party. Many had harbored doubts and even wished against Fani-Kayode's appointment to the renewed Hope cabinet. They feared that his inclusion would spell doom for the propaganda machine of the opposition PDP. And who could forget the spectacle when FFK humbled and silenced Dino, sending him into political oblivion? Such moments fueled the debate surrounding Fani-Kayode's credentials, achievements, and the impact he could have on the Nigerian political landscape.
Those who support Fani-Kayode are quick to recall his track record as the Minister of Aviation. His tenure was marked by numerous achievements and innovations, perhaps the most remarkable being the absence of any air accidents, plane crashes, or mishaps during his stewardship. This feat was seen by many as a miracle and a sign of divine support for a man admired for his dedication to public service. Moreover, his doggedness, transparency, and commitment led to the launch of the MMA Terminal 2, serving as a testament to the success of public-private sector partnerships in Nigeria's aviation industry.
During his time as Minister of Aviation, Fani-Kayode took a bold step by recommending the autonomy of the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) from the Ministry. His proposal received unprecedented support from President Obasanjo and the Ministry of Aviation, resulting in the passage of the NCAA Act. Additionally, he established the Accident Investigation Bureau (AIB), an independent and professional body tasked with investigating air crashes. This move replaced the inefficient and unreliable system where the Ministry of Aviation would investigate crashes. It was a significant improvement that brought about greater trust and competence in the sector.
Notably, Fani-Kayode successfully facilitated Nigeria becoming a signatory of the "Cape Town Convention." This gave Nigerian airline operators access to international loans, boosting their financial capabilities. Furthermore, he received approval from the Federal Executive Council to implement a policy of airline "re-capitalization." This led to the establishment of larger and stronger airlines, with a more substantial asset base. The era of "one owner, one pilot, one plane" airliners, which were previously seen as flying coffins, was phased out, significantly enhancing the safety and reliability of Nigerian carriers. In a remarkable move, Fani-Kayode ensured that the Ministry of Aviation gained exclusive access to the Bi-lateral Air Services Agreement Fund (BASA) held at the CBN, worth billions of Naira. This provided even greater resources to drive advancements in the aviation sector.
While Fani-Kayode's achievements are commendable, his impact extends beyond policy and administration. His blunt honesty, generosity, and fearless truth-telling have garnered both admirers and powerful enemies.
