KANO - Tension is mounting in Kano State as the Commissioner of Lands, Adamu Aliyu, issued a chilling death threat to the judges of the Governorship Election Petition Tribunal on Thursday. He also warned of unleashing greater mayhem on the state's residents, surpassing the ongoing violence witnessed in neighboring Kaduna and Zamfara states.
Residents of rural communities in Kaduna and Zamfara have been enduring a decade-long wave of attacks, killings, and abductions by local terror gangs known as bandits.
In a disturbing statement, Mr. Aliyu insinuated that the tribunal judges might have been bribed to rule against his party, the New Nigeria People's Party (NNPP), in the ongoing petition. He cautioned that if the judges ruled against NNPP, they would face dire consequences, even putting their lives at stake.
The election of Governor Abba Yusuf is currently being challenged at the crucial tribunal by Nasiru Gawuna, the candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC). A date for the verdict has yet to be decided upon.
The Commissioner's menacing remarks were made during a solidarity protest held by NNPP members. Shockingly, a video capturing his threats was subsequently disseminated on Facebook by both NNPP and APC supporters.
Addressing the tribunal judges, Mr. Aliyu declared, "Any judge that allows himself to be used and accepts bribes to deliver an unjust judgment must choose between his life and the tainted money he has collected." He further vowed that if they ruled against NNPP, lives would be sacrificed, or worse, Kano State would descend into chaos like never before, surpassing the conflicts experienced in Zamfara, Kaduna, Katsina, and Borno.
The protests and prayer sessions were organized simultaneously at six different locations in Kano - Katsina Road, Gwarzo Road, Madobi/Sharada Road, Zaria Road, Maiduguri Road, and Hadejia Road. Prominent attendees included the Secretary to the Kano State Government, Baffa Bichi, former Deputy Governor Hafiz Abubakar, members of the state executive council, as well as the governor's special advisers and assistants.
This disturbing incident follows a similar mass event held on August 26th, where the state governor, Abba Yusuf, and his political mentor, Rabiu Kwankwaso, led a gathering to show support for their party in the tribunal petition. During this ceremony, Islamic cleric Sani Shir denounced those challenging the legitimacy of the governor's election as enemies of the state, fervently praying for their destruction.
The people of Kano are now anxiously awaiting the outcome of the tribunal's ruling, hoping that justice will be fairly and impartially served.
