In a surprising turn of events, key members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) appear to be on the verge of leaving the opposition party. Speculations suggest that many prominent figures within the PDP are considering accepting appointments from President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, who has promised a government of national unity following his victory in the 2023 presidential election.
One notable PDP member, the former governor of Rivers State, Nyesom Wike, has already made his move, having accepted a ministerial slot from the Tinubu administration. Wike's appointment has been confirmed by the Senate, further fueling rumors of a potential exodus from the PDP.
Adding to this narrative, another influential PDP chieftain, Senate Anyim Pius Anyim, is reportedly making plans to join Senator David Umahi, the former governor of Ebonyi State, in the All Progressives Congress (APC). It is believed that Anyim recently met with the National Chairman of the APC, Abdullahi Ganduje, at his residence in Abuja to discuss his potential defection. While the outcome of their meeting remains shrouded in secrecy, sources suggest that Anyim may be on his way to joining the ruling party.
This development comes on the heels of Anyim's prior actions during the last general election. The senator, a prominent figure within the PDP, surprised many when he abandoned his party's gubernatorial candidate in Ebonyi, Ifeanyi Chukwuma Odii, in favor of supporting the APC candidate, now Governor Francis Nwifuru. Anyim's stance during the presidential election, particularly regarding PDP's candidate Atiku Abubakar, remains unclear.
Furthermore, earlier in July, Anyim had also met with President Bola Tinubu, raising eyebrows and leading many to speculate about his potential defection. Following the meeting, the former Senate President addressed reporters, expressing his admiration for President Tinubu's successful inauguration and commending him for the decisions he had made thus far.
While the PDP leaders held a recent meeting over the weekend, they have yet to publicly address any disciplinary actions towards party members leaning towards the APC. Former presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar took to Twitter after the meeting, stating that the gathering provided an opportunity to evaluate the nation's current state and deliberate on a path forward from the critical crossroads it currently faces.
As the political landscape continues to shift, the fate of the PDP hangs in the balance. Will more high-ranking members defect to the APC, or will the opposition party manage to regain stability and unity? Only time will tell.
