Barrister El-Zubair Bows to Pressure, Apologises Over Ja’afar, Albani Zaria, Masussaka Remarks

by Mo Hanif

Barrister Alzubair Abubakar has apologised to Nigerians, particularly the families, followers and admirers of four late Islamic scholars, following the controversy generated by an interview he granted AAG Media.

In a statement titled *“On That My Shehu Maishiyya, Shehu Ja’afar, Shehu Albani and Shehu Masussaka Interview with AAG Media Outlet,”* the senior lawyer expressed regret over his remarks, admitting that they had caused pain, anger and grief among sections of the Nigerian public.

Abubakar said he was taken aback by the widespread circulation of the interview while travelling from Murtala Mohammed International Airport, Ikeja, to Abuja.

He explained that reading through reactions on Facebook made him realise the extent of the hurt his comments had caused, particularly among the families and followers of the late scholars.

He specifically recalled a comment by Hajia Hadiza Albani, daughter of the late Sheikh Albani Zaria, who reportedly said she had taken the matter to God and that the family would never forgive him for his remarks.

According to him, her reaction made him realise the depth of the grief he had caused.

Describing the situation as unfortunate, shameful and regrettable, Abubakar insisted that his remarks were not deliberately orchestrated but were rather a slip of the tongue that went too far.

The lawyer, who described himself as an elderly person, senior legal practitioner and patriotic Nigerian, said he was symbolically going on his knees to seek forgiveness from Nigerians, particularly the families, followers and admirers of the four Islamic scholars.

"I'm truly sorry for the pains, anguish, grief and anger I caused you," he stated.

He further maintained that being malicious, reckless or hard-hearted was not part of his character, adding that he did not claim to be an Islamic scholar but was only striving to make positive contributions to Nigeria's progress and development.

Abubakar also expressed his personal conviction that the four late scholars, whom he described as having been unjustly assassinated, were in a good position in Barzakh, praying that Allah would unite the hearts of Muslims and grant believers the opportunity to meet Prophet Muhammad (SAW) at the sacred pond of Al-Kauthar.

He concluded by praying for unity among Muslims and thanking Nigerians for their understanding.

The apology comes amid growing controversy over his earlier remarks concerning the late scholars and their followers, which attracted strong reactions from their families, students and admirers.
