United States President Donald Trump has again insisted that Canada will eventually become the 51st state of America, repeating the claim during a rally in Arizona.
Speaking to supporters in Bullhead City, Trump said the two countries would only work if Canada joined the union. He said Canada would end up being the 51st state because that is the only way it works, adding that the US does not need Canada but Canada needs America.
Trump accused Canada of treating the US badly through tariffs, especially on dairy products, and claimed Washington loses up to 100 billion dollars a year supporting a country that is not part of America. He compared the situation to Greenland, saying Canada would end up doing something just like it. He also repeated his idea of renaming Lake Ontario as Lake America.
The remarks come amid ongoing trade tensions between the two longtime allies, with both sides having imposed tariffs on goods crossing the border in recent months. Canadian officials have repeatedly rejected any suggestion of joining the US. British Columbia Premier David Eby previously announced plans for border signs declaring the province would never be the 51st state, while Ontario Premier Doug Ford has said Canadian sovereignty is not for sale.
Trump has made similar comments throughout his term, often referring to Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney as a governor. Ottawa has maintained that Canada remains an independent nation.
