Iranian authorities executed two men on Tuesday after they were convicted of armed rebellion and membership in an Islamic State cell that was planning attacks inside the country. The executions were carried out after the Supreme Court upheld the death sentences.
The Iranian judiciary identified the men as Mohieddin Abdollahi and Hossein Palani. According to Iranian state television, the two belonged to an Islamic State cell that had formed after the group suffered territorial defeats in Iraq and Syria. The cell was actively working to rebuild its network and had established a presence in the Bamo mountain area near the Iranian border with Iraq. Intelligence reports indicated the group was using the strategic location to recruit fighters, stockpile arms, and plan cross-border infiltration operations.
Iranian security forces tracked the group and were able to identify its hideout before it could carry out its plans. A military operation was launched to encircle the area, leading to a clash in which several militants were killed. Three members of Iran's Revolutionary Guard also died during the operation. The security forces arrested the remaining members of the cell and seized significant quantities of weapons, ammunition, equipment, and documents.
The two men were prosecuted and found guilty of armed rebellion against the Islamic Republic, a charge related to their membership in the militant cell. The court sentenced them to death. Following legal proceedings and a review by the Supreme Court, which upheld the sentences, the men were executed by hanging on Tuesday morning. The judiciary did not disclose where the executions were carried out.
