Borno State Governor, Babagana Umara Zulum, has donated ₦50 million to the family of the late Lt. Col. OC Okolo, who was killed in a Boko Haram attack in the state, in a gesture underscoring continued support for troops engaged in counter-insurgency operations.
Lt. Col. Okolo lost his life on February 16, 2026, during an ആക്രമation by insurgents at Mandaragirau in Biu Local Government Area, one of the volatile flashpoints in Borno State.
The donation was formally presented on April 10 at a funeral service held in Obinofia Ndiuno, Ezeagu Local Government Area of Enugu State, where the governor was represented by his Special Adviser on Security, retired Brigadier General Abdullahi Sabi Ishaq.
According to a statement by the governor’s spokesman, Dauda Illiya, the financial support forms part of the state government’s broader commitment to the welfare of families of military personnel who have paid the ultimate price in the fight against insurgency.
Zulum described the late officer as a “gallant, dedicated and committed” serviceman whose sacrifice would not be forgotten, while extending condolences to his family, colleagues, and associates.
He further assured that his administration would continue to stand by families of fallen heroes, as well as those wounded or missing in action, emphasizing sustained collaboration with security forces battling insurgents across the North-East.
The Boko Haram insurgency, which has plagued the region for over a decade, continues to pose significant security challenges, with military formations and civilian communities frequently targeted in attacks across Borno State.
Family representatives of the deceased officer expressed appreciation for the governor’s gesture, describing it as a show of compassion and solidarity in a moment of profound loss.
