Former Senate President, Bukola Saraki, has advised the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to halt ongoing legal battles over its disputed national convention and organise a fresh one in line with the law.
Saraki’s call followed a recent judgment of the Court of Appeal in Abuja which upheld an earlier ruling of the Federal High Court restraining the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) from recognising the outcome of the PDP national convention held in Ibadan, Oyo State, in November 2025.
The appellate court affirmed that the convention did not comply with required legal procedures, including issues relating to statutory notice to INEC and alleged breaches of provisions of the Electoral Act and the party’s constitution.
Reacting to the development, Saraki urged party leaders and stakeholders to accept the judgment and avoid prolonged litigation that could further deepen divisions within the opposition party.
According to him, continuing the legal tussle up to the Supreme Court may consume valuable time needed for the party to reposition itself ahead of the 2027 general elections.
He warned that unresolved leadership disputes could jeopardise the chances of PDP members intending to contest elections on the party’s platform if the internal crisis persists.
The former Senate President therefore recommended that the party convene an all-inclusive national convention that meets constitutional and electoral requirements and is recognised by INEC.
The leadership crisis within the PDP has been worsened by internal suspensions and disagreements among party officials, with factions accusing one another of breaching party rules and aligning with external political interests.
Saraki, however, stressed the need for reconciliation, urging party leaders to prioritise unity and the survival of the party over personal ambitions.
